Platelet-rich Plasma with MD Pen® Micro-Needling
What is PRP?
Platelet Rich Plasma, also known as “PRP,” is an aesthetic treatment whereby a person’s own blood is applied to the skin or on the scalp for rejuvenation and regeneration, respectively. The PRP can be administered two different ways, either alone or in combination: injection, micro-needling.
How does the doctor harvest PRP from my blood?
After drawing about 2 tablespoons of your blood, we use a special dual-spin centrifuge to harvest 1.5 – 2 million platelets. This is 6 -10 times the normal concentration of platelets. Dr. Newsome will then apply numbing cream to minimize discomfort. Then the Md Pen ® is used for Micro-Needling to create small channels in the skin. These small channels allow the PRP to be applied topically, and allow it pass through the skin to the dermis where platelets are activated to cause healing.
How does PRP work to improve cellulite, stretch marks or other conditions?
Platelets are very small cells in your blood that are involved in the clotting process, but they have additional benefits as well. When PRP is injected into the damaged area it causes a mild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade. As the platelets organize in the clot they release enzymes which to promote healing by attracting stem cells to repair the damaged area. As a result, new collagen begins to develop. As the collagen matures it begins to shrink causing the tightening and strengthening of the damaged area. When treating injured or sun and time damaged tissue they can induce a remodeling of the tissue to a healthier and younger state.
