Why You May Not Be Happy with the Results of Your Current GLP-1 Treatment
GLP-1 medications have changed the landscape of medical weight loss, helping many people lose weight and improve their health. But if you are already taking a GLP-1 medication and aren’t seeing the results you expected, you may be wondering what went wrong.
You may have lost some weight but not as much as you hoped. Perhaps your progress has stalled. Maybe your appetite isn’t as well controlled as it was when you first started treatment. Or you may be experiencing side effects that make the medication difficult to continue.
Whatever the reason, feeling dissatisfied with your current treatment does not necessarily mean that weight loss medication isn’t right for you. It may mean that your current approach deserves a closer look.
Weight Loss Results Can Vary from Person to Person
One of the most important things to understand about GLP-1 treatment is that there is no single result that everyone should expect.
Weight management medications can produce meaningful weight loss, but individual responses vary. Factors such as the medication being used, the treatment plan, health conditions, other medications, eating habits, physical activity, and individual biology can all influence results. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) notes that weight can be affected by numerous factors — including lifestyle, sleep, medications, health problems, family history, and genetics.
That means comparing your progress with a friend, a social media post, or someone else’s before-and-after story may not tell you whether your treatment is working appropriately for you. The following are common reasons GLP-1 patients can experience dissatisfaction.
- You May Not Be Getting the Results You Expected
GLP-1 medications are not magic solutions, and weight loss does not necessarily happen at the same rate throughout treatment.
Some people lose weight relatively quickly at first and then experience a period when the scale moves more slowly. Others may lose weight but feel that the amount is insufficient compared with what they expected from their medication.
A plateau can also be frustrating. After seeing consistent progress, it can be discouraging when your weight remains essentially unchanged for several weeks.
A slower rate of weight loss does not automatically mean that the medication has stopped working. However, a prolonged lack of progress is worth discussing with the healthcare professional managing your treatment.
- Your Treatment May Need to Be Reassessed
There are several FDA-approved medications used for chronic weight management, including semaglutide and tirzepatide. They do not all work in exactly the same way, and treatment plans can differ from one person to another.
Your healthcare provider may need to look at factors such as:
- How long you have been taking the medication
- Your current dose and dosing schedule
- How your weight has changed since treatment began
- Whether your appetite and food intake have changed
- Any side effects you are experiencing
- Other medications or supplements you take
- Your medical history and other health conditions
- Your eating, activity, sleep, and other lifestyle factors
The goal isn’t simply to take a GLP-1 medication. The goal is to determine whether your overall treatment approach is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
- Side Effects May Be Affecting Your Experience
For some people, the problem isn’t only a lack of weight loss. The medication may be producing unwanted side effects.
Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, or abdominal discomfort can occur with GLP-1 medications. If side effects are interfering with your daily life, making it difficult to eat appropriately, or causing you to consider stopping treatment, your healthcare provider should know.
Don’t change your dose, frequency, or medication on your own in an attempt to improve your results. Your treatment should be adjusted under appropriate medical supervision.
- Your Expectations May Not Match Your Treatment Goals
The number on the scale is important, but it isn’t the only measure of progress. A medically appropriate weight-loss goal depends on the individual. Even a relatively modest reduction in body weight can provide health benefits for some people. The NIDDK notes that losing 5% to 10% of starting body weight may help improve certain health measures, including blood sugar, blood pressure, and triglyceride levels.
At the same time, if you have been following your treatment plan and remain unhappy with your progress, that concern deserves attention. A good treatment plan should consider your health goals — not just an arbitrary number on the scale.
- Your Overall Weight Loss Plan Matters, Too
Medication is only one component of comprehensive weight management. GLP-1 medications work best when combined with healthy eating and physical activity. Other factors — including sleep and certain medications or health conditions — can also influence weight.
This doesn’t mean that disappointing results are your fault. Weight management is complex, and being told to “eat less and exercise more” doesn’t address every factor that can affect your ability to lose weight. Our blog post — “Five Common Weight Loss Challenges” — explains typical pitfalls in greater detail.
Instead, your healthcare provider can look at the bigger picture and determine whether changes to your overall approach may be appropriate.
- You May Not Be Receiving the Follow-Up You Need
GLP-1 treatment shouldn’t be a “one prescription and you’re on your own” experience. Regular medical follow-up gives you an opportunity to discuss your progress, concerns, side effects, and goals. It also allows your healthcare provider to determine whether your current treatment remains appropriate.
This can be particularly important if you are obtaining medication through a service that provides limited opportunities to speak with a healthcare professional. Keep in mind that getting a GLP-1 prescription is not necessarily the same thing as receiving the right treatment and ongoing care for your individual situation.
If you’re taking a GLP-1 medication but are having difficulty getting answers to your questions or aren’t satisfied with the care you’re receiving, seeking another medical opinion may be worthwhile.
Don’t Assume You Have to Settle for Unsatisfactory Results
If you’re already taking a GLP-1 medication and aren’t happy with your results, you don’t necessarily have to choose between continuing as you are and giving up on treatment altogether. A medical review can help you understand what may be contributing to your experience and whether there are appropriate options to consider.
At Solutions Weight Loss, we understand that people may reach a point where they have questions about the GLP-1 treatment they are currently receiving. That’s why we offer a GLP-1 Quick Review for individuals who are already taking a GLP-1 medication but aren’t satisfied with their results, medication, provider, service, or cost — or who are having difficulty getting in touch with their current provider.
The GLP-1 Quick Review is a free, no-obligation 10-minute, in-office review with William E. Newsome, M.D. — Medical Director and co-owner of Solutions Weight Loss. The purpose isn’t to tell you what medication you should take. It’s an opportunity to have a focused, in-person conversation with Dr. Newsome about your current situation and determine whether another approach may be appropriate for you. This is truly a no-obligation review. After talking with Dr. Newsome, you may choose to continue with your current provider or decide to move forward with our full new patient consultation. Either way, the choice is yours.
“One of the things I’ve noticed is that some patients come to us already taking a GLP-1 medication but feel like they’re essentially managing the treatment themselves,” said Dr. Newsome. “They may have received the medication, but they aren’t sure whether they’re on the right dose, whether their results are what they should expect, what to do when their weight loss slows down, or whether changes should be made.
“My experience has been that patients often aren’t necessarily dissatisfied with the medication itself. They’re dissatisfied because they don’t feel they’re getting enough guidance along with it. Having access to the medication is only one part of successful weight loss. Patients also need someone who can evaluate their progress, address side effects, make adjustments when needed, and help them understand what to do when things aren’t going as expected.”
